Jars of Clay… Why Not to Idolize Christian Celebrity (Hint: They will let you down)

I look beyond the empty cross
forgetting what my life has cost
so wipe away the crimson stains
and dull the nails that still remain
so steal my heart and take the pain
take the selfish, take the weak
and all the things I cannot hide
take the beauty, take my tears
take my world apart, take my world apart

– Dan Haseltine, World Apart (From the Album “Jars of Clay”)

I’m trying to make sense of the conservative argument. But it doesn’t hold up to basic scrutiny. Feels akin to women’s suffrage. Is the argument born of isolated application of scripture or is it combined with the knowledge born of friendship with someone who is gay? I just don’t see a negative effect to allowing gay marriage.  No societal breakdown, no war on traditional marriage. ?? Anyone?

– Dan Haseltine, Twitter

How is it the former can be so theologically rich, and biblically informed… and the latter can be so foolish and illogical. I remember that I used to look up this guy (and Jennifer Knapp, and Derek Webb) and want to be like them. Now I pray that God will redeem them from their waywardness and renew in them a right spirit. This is a terrible turn of events. What’s next? Mac Powell going to come out and say that slavery is okay? Toby Mac going to be promoting the legalization of Marijuana? I know… Amy Grant is going to commit adultery and divorce her husband… oh, wait. I guess there is nothing new under the Sun.

The fact is, whether it is Mark Driscoll, Chris Tomlin, your own pastor, or Dan Haseltine. They are going to let you down. However, Jesus never lets you down. Look to him, not to anyone else.
